Esco: yurp
Ight, so wassup with Dj Steel?
Steel: Life is good, I cant complain
Esco : Great, when did you start spinning and what/who inspired you?
Steel: I got 17 yrs in... My mom taught me how to Dj... She used to spin back in the 80s... and I would have to say she inspired me.. Ever since I used to peep my head in the Living room when she threw her house parties... (I was supposed to be in the bed) lol
Esco: of course I know you and know the answer to the previous question.... but every time I ever heard the history of your start I just always thought that was too dope to have your Mom dj back in the day and inspire you
Steel: Thx my nig
I gotta do it for her if not anything!
Esco: At what point did you realize that you were nice and had the ability to dj as a career.... it's definitely not for everybody.
there's plenty of dj's that think or are told that they are better than they actually are.
Steel: Lol.. that's funny you ask that. I was the opposite... I made sure that I was nice before I claimed it.. I would say It took me about a year of practicing everyday to be able to hold down a whole party. About a year into me dj'n, I dj'd a wedding and killed it! I was 16, I Made $350, I said to myself "This ain't bad"
Esco: lol, $350 at 16 is more than what some grown men are making now.
Steel: lol.. I know. More than some Dj's get paid today!
Esco: I know there's not many places you haven't shut down between Jersey and NYC, what was you're favorite venue of all times and why?
Steel: Club Exit, The Franchise Boyz, 3000 ppl Leanin and Rockin wit it at the same time.. I think this was 2005 or 2006.. memorable
Esco: yea, that's a serious look right there... real quick, most artists go through names before one sticks.... what was your name before Steel?
Steel: Lol.. damn you gone do me like that? Dj Money
lol
Esco: lol.... better than Envy's.... but we're not touching that one, lmao
Steel: Lol.. I was just thinking about his
Esco: Was there ever a venue that you wanted to touch but never had the opportunity to?
Steel: Any Poppin spot in Vegas... I have yet to dj there.. This year that's one of my goals
Esco: Interesting
Steel: Oh and Milan, Italy
Esco: Your goal at one point was the fm dial, you did that and became affiliated with the Power fam. Are you still pushing for that slot?
Steel: I'm pushing for greatness! Power105.1 is def. in my sights, but my primary goal is not just to be a local radio dj but to be a worldwide brand, a household name. When I get to that point, I can pretty much call the shots.
Esco: Understood, recently you have joined the SiriusXM fam... how is that going?
Steel: Its a good look.. My bro Envy and Ron Mills pulled me in for a new show idea that they have.. Its going to be like a new age Yo MTV Raps.. Doing artist interviews, live performances, and in between I dj..
We've interviewed Waka Flocka, The Game, J Cole, Future, Maino, 2 Chainz and a couple of other artists
Esco: Shouts to both Envy & Ron Mills, this is what hip hop needs.... shows like this.
As a dj you're in control of what records see the light, at least that is the theory behind the dj. Do you think that theory still holds true?
Steel: Yes and No.. There's a machine driving this music industry.. Dj's are just the distributors.. To be apart of the big picture you have to play by the rules of the powers that be... Meaning, they have the structure in place, so you have to play by their rules.. Some songs get inserted into the machine and Dj's have to play them!
I give the best interviews!
lol
Esco: That's pretty much the explanation of the radio stations playing the same five records across the country.
Steel: They gone call me "Real Deal Steel"
lol
yup!
Esco: lmao
Steel: put all that in there, lol
Esco: Ight bro, I've been privileged to be apart of your career, we once talked to someone separately who told both of us the same things. These things are materializing. I was also recently in the studio with you while you were recording one of our teammates Dox.... at some point it came out that you had some heat in your computer. In your voice "You know I've been making beats right?"
So you played numerous beats which were all bangers, not b/c I'm your man but b/c I could hear various major artists on them.
The official cosign also came from another teammate Rsonist (The Heatmakerz)
In recent days I have noticed that more and more bangers have been reaching my email.... Is it safe to say that you are now a producer as well?
Steel: Thank you brotha.. I appreciate that... I'm starting to wear the producer/Engineer hat more and more these days.. Just starting out as a producer you have to be confident in what you create. For me, that confidence came when I let you, Dox, and Rsonist hear them and I could tell that ya'll genuinely were diggin them.. From there I started to make more and more... plus I love the feeling of making something hot and people enjoying it.
That's the satisfaction I get from Djing clubs.. I get to play other peoples music and get the same reaction as the artist as If I was the one who made the song!
Esco: I'm sure this is second nature because you understand bpm's and sound patterns and all the things that has the potential to make the crowd move
Producers get it!!! Point, blank, period...lol
To love it as well is great....
Are there any artists that you're gunning for as of now that you have tracks for?
Steel: I plan on working with J Cole, and 2 Chainz in the near future. I wanna get some tracks to the big homies like Jay, Kanye, Nas just to name a few.. All would be legendary!
Esco: OK, nice!! Now to get back to the places where you would like to dj.... we know that those places hire producers and not dj's..... So that goal is very reachable!!!
that eliminates the question of where you will be in a years time.
Lastly, if you eliminate a person to take their spot... who would it be?
Steel: That's a good one.. I would have to say........ The old me.. I'm constantly trying to improve myself. I stay observant, and I'm a student of the game. As long as I keep that formula the rest will take care of itself...
Bong!
lol
Esco: gotta respect that....
